Transforming Your Health Post-ACL Surgery: A Journey of Healing and Self-Discovery

For many of us, it often takes a significant event to realize that our current lifestyle isn't serving our best interests. In my case, that wake-up call came in the form of an ACL injury in 2020. Prior to the injury, I considered myself fit, but I've come to understand that being fit doesn't always equate to being healthy.

At the time of my injury, I was mentally stressed, physically overexerted, and undernourished. The ACL tear and subsequent surgery forced me to reassess my approach to health and well-being. It pushed me to discover what was missing in my life and helped me develop habits that not only aided my recovery but also led me to become the healthiest version of myself.

Habit 1: Smart Exercise Planning

Before my ACL injury, my approach to exercise was haphazard at best. I gravitated towards workouts that seemed fun, challenging, or intense, without much consideration for a structured program. I expected my body to perform optimally in various sports without proper preparation – a mindset that, in hindsight, was unrealistic and risky.

Post-surgery, I recognized the need for a more thoughtful approach to exercise. I needed a program that balanced both long-term joint health and short-term performance goals. This realization led me to the ATG (Athletic Truth Group) program, which I followed diligently. The ATG program focuses on building joint resilience and overall body strength, which was crucial for my recovery.

However, I found that I also needed to incorporate more strength and power-based training. To address this, I supplemented the ATG program with Kelly Matthews' strength training program from Ladder. This combination provided a balanced approach to fitness, allowing me to stay pain-free while still excelling in my chosen sports.

There are many recovery modalities available, but one of my favorites is massage. While professional massages are great, they're not always accessible or affordable for everyone. The combination of percussive massage and heat helps boost circulation, aids muscle recovery between training sessions, and promotes relaxation. The portability of this device allows me to use it for pre-workout warm-ups, post-workout recovery, and even during rest days.

To this day, I periodically log my food intake (usually for one week each month) to ensure I'm meeting my nutritional needs. This practice helps me maintain awareness of my eating habits and make adjustments as necessary.
